Compare and contrast persuasion, manipulation, coercion, and threats. Define and explain each term. How are these actions similar? How are they different? In what types of negotiation situations might each of these tactics be used? Why?
Persuasion - Persuasion is method of changing opinions or views of individual or group of individuals by using various tools such as written, verbal or visual. They can be positive or negative in nature. Usually this is used to convince others about a particular idea and influence decision making.
Manipulation - It is a form of persuasion with an intention to mislead or misguide the opponent into agreeing. It could or could not cause harm to the individual. However, it is often deceptive in nature. It is not an aggressive method to convince other/s. It may be used to sell a faulty product or may be used to misguide an individual in decision making.
Coercion - It is a method of using forceful means to persuade other individual/s. During this, abusive words are used by individuals and others are forced to act against their will. This is usually applied by autocratic leaders in an organization when ever they wish to get their sub-ordinates to do as per their instructions. This even includes threatening them with suspension if they fail to follow their directions.
Threats - It is using force or aggressive means to make others agree to one's opinions and act in a pre-determined way. This method uses harsh and unfriendly means to make others do what one wants them to. It includes threatening one with life or danger to near and dear ones. This is usually used by criminals in case of robbery or any other illegal activities.
The similarity among persuasion, manipulation, coercion, and threats is that they are methods used to influence others decision making and actions. The difference lies in the manner in which influencing action takes place- whether polite convincing as in persuasion or aggressively as in threat.
When negotiating these tactics can be used to influence the outcome. However, they cannot be used just anywhere. When in formal or balanced negotiation such as business deals one must use persuasion. Threat or coercion must never be used in formal scenario as these are illegal and a person using them can be legally charged or fined or even sued. Manipulation is used to misguide others and is often used by individuals such as marketers of low quality product and services.
