Answer #1

The two molecules above, which have same chemical formulas but different functional groups, are considered isomers .

The molecular formula for both molecules is same, although glyceraldehyde contains an oxygen double-bonded to an end carbon, while dihydroxyacetone contains an oxygen double-bonded to a central carbon .

Because of their minor differences in the arrangement of atoms, we would expect these two molecules to have different chemical properties and to react differently in chemical reactions.

Note -

Isotopes are those compounds which have same atomic number but different atomic mass. This is because the number of neutrons in these compounds is different.

Isobars are those compounds which have same atomic number but different mass number. This is because the number of protons in these compounds is different.

Isomers are those compounds which have same chemical on molecular formula but different structural formula because of presence of the different functional group or the arrangement of groups is different.

Week 10- Constitutional isomers Constitutional isomers have the same molecular formula, but their atoms are bonded in different orders. These may be further distinguished as chain isomers, which differ only in hydrocarbon chain structure, positional isomers, which differ in the location of a functional group, and functional group isomers which differ in the nature of their functional groups. Typically chain and position isomers show only modest differences in their physical and chemical properties, while functional group isomers differ greatly from...
