Assessment Questions

  1. . Reflect on your own experience and describe two leaders you encountered, one you admired and found easy to follow, and the other one who you found ineffective. Describe the behaviors of each that underlie your opinion of them. What lessons did you learn from them you could apply to your own managerial style?
  1. . Please describe two situations; the first, a situation where you believe a very directive style would be appropriate and the second, one where you think a very collaborative style would better serve the situation. In both instances, describe the situation and your reasoning.
  1. . Would you prefer managing in a huge enterprise or a small one? What factors entered into your decision?

4. Do you think the “$2,000.00 to quit” offer is a sound business practice? Why or why not?

  1. . Hopefully have a fairly full understanding of what a manager does. If you were offered a managerial position (or if you currently hold one), what aspect of being a manager is a natural fit with your skills and personality? Conversely, which aspect do you feel would require more conscious effort on your part? Management is definitely NOT for everyone… do you think it is a career path you would enjoy?

Answering the first question as per Chegg Guidelines:

1. I work as a product manager in an MNC. I had joined the company as an assistant product manager. My manager, Me. Lee was quite a helpful leader. He was a situational leader. He used to change his leadership style to suit the demand of the situation at hand. Once there was a product release and the production process was still lagging behind. Mr. Lee took the initiative and inspired the team to work for extra hours to get the work done. He recognized the efforts of all team members and gave us a party to reward our hard work and dedication. Mr. Lee used to follow Hershey and Blanchard’s situational leadership style.

In my current role as product manager, I work under Mr. Andy, who is product head. Mr. Andy is quite a transactional leader. He wants to get the results. He is bothered about the ends but does not care about the means followed to achieve the same. He is known to use the carrot and stick approach with his employees. If a work is done well, he will appreciate and reward the employee but if it has been done badly or lacks some functionality, then Mr. Andy did not hesitate in rebuking and scolding the employee in front of others. This was quite demotivating for all employees and so no one wanted to work under him.

I feel situational leadership is the best leadership to pave a project to success. The amount of positivity and collaboration which emanates from this leadership, is unmatchable. Moreover situational leader facilitates a positive work environment where everyone is quite happy to collaborate, work and produce results. Taking the example of Mr. Andy, if a manager is too directive and does not care for his employees, the overall employee morale remains low and gets reflected in his or her performance. Hence a collaborative and situational leader can be considered to be more successful than a directive and transactional leader.
