AN ETHICAL DILEMMA
Kelsey Alexander is a sales representative for a large industrial distributor of electrical components in a highly competitive sales territory in upstate New York. She has learned that Connection Central, one of her major competitors, is opening a new distribution center in her territory. Kelsey wanted to be better informed about her competitor’s products and distribution capabilities, so she checked out Connection Central’s Web site, where she found an invitation to a grand opening for the distribution center. The invitation was directed to Connection Central customers, local government officials, and the business press. The invitation also stated that the general public would be welcome on a space available basis. Kelsey filled out an RSVP form on Connection Central’s Web site, pretending to be in the “general public” category. She used a fictitious name for herself and her company. She figured that, as a competitor, she would not be welcome at the open house and she thought her actions were justifiable. As she completed the registration form for the open house, Kelsey reminded herself that “all is fair in love and war,” and that she was at war with Connection Central.
What do you think of Kelsey’s actions?
Answer
Ethical dilemma is experienced when an individual has to chose an action which is beneficial but may not be ethical. And he/she is not sure about the decision made is right or is wrong.
Kelsey's actions to get Information about connection central, in her veiwes is right because, it will help her strategies plans and be better in the market. It also gives the business competitive advantage. But, hiding the identity and approaching the competitor as one of the individual in general public, is not ethical. She would have asked the connected central if she is allowed to enter the premise and if not, she would have accessed web site and would have tried to get information regarding the new distribution unit.
