Here is why mission and vision statements for the organisation are important and necessary:

  • The vision: It is the long-term aspirational goal of the organisation. It is a broad description of the organisational outcomes which a firm strives to achieve and become in future. It helps to bring inspiration, motivation and passion in the organisation culture. The most important factor is that the vision should be short, concise and understood by the entire organisation.
  • The mission: The vision defined the future and the mission helps to understand what must be done in current reality to achieve the vision in future. It is more specific and helps to lay down factors that will help differentiate the firm from its competitors. It helps to make various stakeholders understand what the company is planning to achieve and build trust. It helps to make understand the value and impact the firm is trying to create for society.

They (Vision & mission statements) impact the decision making as they help to understand the future, current reality and the framework an organisation has to follow. It provides an understanding of what future an organisation aspires to achieve to guide the decision making in the present.

It also impacts the decision making on a daily basis as the firm has to ensure that all decision is made within the boundaries of ethics and morals defined by the organisation.

Part 2) Here is how the culture can impact the vision and mission and also mentioned various aspects that might make a difference:

  • A positive culture that embraces diversity helps employees to get to know each other. Diversity brings with itself great experiences, stories and skills. It is important to understand each and every employee in terms of skills, journey and personal goals. It helps to manage the team well.
  • The culture of valuing team support - It brings a diversity of thoughts, ideas and solutions to various organisational challenges. It brings creativity and the culture of innovation in the team leading to more success and achievement of vision and mission statements.

  • The right culture helps to bring efficiency and increase in productivity in an equitable manner. Teams adapt to a learning environment where communication is effective and everyone is given consistent knowledge and resources.
  • Example - Zappos is a great organisation which focuses on culture for vision and mission statements achievement. They believe happier employees are productive and have a higher commitment to the organisation. It is important that organisation practices are focused on better and happier organisation culture.

Google is an organisation which constantly strives to bring changes and innovation. The vision to provide access to world information in one click requires a massive change initiative approach.

  • Since it has highly skilled employees it keeps investing in education & research which made the organisation effective in bringing the culture of innovation and change.
  • It has challenged the conventional thinking style and work ethics as followed in other companies.
  • Google has been able to integrate, develop and re-develop the internal & external skills to build a diverse and highly talented workforce who can adapt to the changing environment.
  • It is a fast workplace. It doesn't believe in delaying problems or challenges and addresses them as quickly as possible.
  • Another approach to bringing change management has been being people-centric in the entire process. The organisation believe that employees need their creative freedom and it provides that environment to facilitate the same.
  • Google is a completely open organisation when it comes to networks and collaborations. Due to the constant exchange of information and knowledge, it has been able to adapt to change and grow faster.

A shared vision makes sure all employees are invested in the process to bring the needed change. People are able to communicate effectively & work with organisational commitment.
