A company is making a critical part for the iPhone. What type of inspection plan would you recommend as this part is manufactured (0% inspection, 100% inspection, or something in-between)? I would recommend a somewhat in between inspection strategy ( Sampling Inspection) which could be classified into two categories:
- Risk-Based Inspection
This comprises of systems and processes to identify any kind of risk associated with the spare part. Put essentially, the hazard can be characterized by two components: the consequence of failure (CoF) and the probability of failure (PoF). The POF is the probability that a bit of hardware will fall flat at a given time. Besides, both the CoF and the PoF include subjective and quantitative evaluations.
- Fitness-for-Service
FFS is a prescribed practice and industry standard that assesses in-administration hardware for basic structural integrity. The reason for FFS is to decide whether a segment is appropriate to have proceeded with the administration. There are three degrees of FFS appraisals, each expanding in level of detail, investigation, and unpredictability.
Reason for choosing a Somewhere Inspection Strategy?
- 0% Inspection is not a feasible option as that would put the quality of the spare part at risk and that could hamper the final product i.e iPhone.
- 100% inspections create pomposity. Negatives:
- Since the inspections are based on samples, there is always some chance of making the incorrect inference about a lot from which the samples are being chosen. One can never be sure about the quality of each and every spare part, this is based on assumptions and probabilities.
- The success of inspection depends upon the size of the lot, the number of samples taken, acceptance criteria, etc.
