IPSP: Refers to inhibitory postsynaptic potential. Hyperpolarization of postsynaptic neuron occurs here. It is a result of influx of chloride ions into the postsynaptic neuron.

EPSP: Refers to excitatory postsynaptic potential. Depolarization of  postsynaptic neuron occurs here. It is a result of influx of sodium ions into the postsynaptic neuron.
