Genetically Modified Foods (GMO's).
1.Discovery New's: What's the Deal With Genetically Modified Food?
2. Neil deGrasse Tyson Response to GMO's Critics
This week you are studying about Biotechnology. Applications of biotechnology include diagnosing and finding the cure to diseases, solving criminal cases, and the development of new varieties of plants and food for human consumption. Many people question the safety of genetically modified foods, and others feel that the issue is not about safety but rather being informed about what we are eating by requiring that all genetically modified foods and food containing GMO's be labeled before they are sold in the supermarket. Still others argue that nobody has ever got sick after consuming GMO's even though they have been on the market for more than 20 years. Do you have any concerns about GMO's?
GMO is nothing but introducing or knocking down property from organism DNA. This modification can define the next generation progeny to had the additional property represent by that specific junk of DNA. As a student of science, I do not think GMOs have any negative impact on the consumer. I think the need for innovation is always based on the problem we face. Currently, we are on the verge of population explosion, the resources are getting vanished day by day. Food is one of the essential necessities for human survival. To meet the need of the outgrowing population we need more farmers, farming land and good quality crop for the same. With increasing human interference with nature has brought us to the hard reality of life, increasing natural calamity has pushed us way too back to perform traditional farming. To overcome this dramatic situation the role of GMOs can contribute a lot. Today's state of the art technology we can develop GMOs that are able to sustain themself in very harsh environmental conditions (Drought, heavy rain, heat shock, heavy snowfall, etc). The same technology can also help to prevent pathogenic attacks on the plant crops by making them resistant. The same technology can also help to increase the yield of a crop which will be a necessity in the future. There is plenty of application of genetically engineering technology.
In the end, a question arises Why do we need GMOs? I think the best acceptable answer you can find from those people who are getting benefits from the GMO crops. The place like African countries is able to gain some profit from the GMO crops which helping them to meet there end. Neil deGrasse Tyson asked the same question why do we need GMOs? the simple answer is there are a number of problems (like pest control, climate change) that can not be solved by traditional methods. All the blunder in the consumer's mind has been created by the politician and media. There is also the hand of agricultural industries in the same. The day is not far that we need to depend on GMOs in the future.
