there are multiple theories of endometriosis.

  • sampson's theory retrograde menstruation- during menstruation, the endometrial contents travels through the fallopian tube and gets deposited in the peritoneal cavity. the viable cells in these deposits grow and resulting in endometriosis
  • coelomic metaplasia- endometrial tissue originates by metaplasia of celomic membrane.
  • lymphatic and hematogenous spread of endometrial cells during menstruation. Damaged blood vessels and lymphatics take up endometrial cells during menstruation and these cells get deposited elsewhere and function like endometrium.
