A 30 year old man went to see his health care provider for an exam. Upon physical exam he was found to have a normal BMI and was quite athletic.  Labs were ordered that demonstrated as are as follows:

LDL - 350mg/dl

HDL- 40mg/dl

Total cholesterol 315mg/dl

Triglycerides 250mg/dl

These values are consistent with hypercholesterolemia.

Upon exam it was discovered that he has a family history of deaths in his family at a young age from either stoke or heart disease. The heath care provider is concerned for familial hypercholesteremia. If this is his diagnosis what is the cause of this and how can it be treated?

Familial hypercholesterolemia is a genetic disorder it is caused due to defect on chromosome 19

This defect makes the body unable to remove low density lipoprotein from the blood which leads to high levels in the blood

2.Treatment includes following of dietary recommendations

1.Total fat intake should be less then 30% of total calories intake

increase intake of monosaturated and polyunsaturated fats and fibre

And treatment includes combination of lifestyle changes and statin therapy and lipoprotein apresis

Now a days combination of ezetimibe and atorvastatin

this is for the reduction of statin levels
