An experiment was done in which a mouse was irradiated to the point where its bone marrow stopped producing blood cells; if left untreated, the mouse would die. The mouse was injected with a single cell and survived. How did this happen?

The mouse was possibly injected with a stem cell. A stem cell is an unspecialised kind of cell that differs from other cells in that it has the property of dividing into any kind of specialised cell. In many tissues, stem cells serve as a sort of internal repair system, dividing without limit to replenish other cells. Each new stem cell has the potential either to remain a stem cell or to become another type of cell with a more specialized function.

Under physiologic conditions, stem cells can be induced to become tissue or organ specific cells. In some organs like the gut and bone marrow, stem cells divide to repair and replace damaged tissues. They can give rise to neurons, muscle cells and even red blood cells.
