Coders must reference both the Alphabetical index and tabular list, because it is essential to use both the Alphabetical index and tabular list when assigning a code because,

Alphabetical index does not always provide full code.

Selection of full code, dominance any applicable 7th character can only done in the tabular list.

If there is dash line (-) shown at the end of Alphabetical index, it indicates the additional character are required.

Even if dash line is not written at the end of Alphabetical index, after that also it is necessary to refer the tabular list to verify.

Summary:- Do not rely on just one. It can lead to error in code assignment and code selection become less specific.
