There are three theoretical perspectives- namely,
1.The symbolic interactionism- People symbolize their interpretation based upon their own perceptions. Each interpretation is attached with some words with subjective meaning.
2.The structural functionalism- According to this perspective, everyone in the society is bonded with each other's commitment to help and grow.
3.The conflict- This perception challenges the status quo of the society and claims that people with stronger status contribute more to advance the society because the resources that drive the society are limited.

Because of symbolic interactions, meaning of an illness in society is firmly based upon pre-designed interpretations about the illness.
For example, a drug addict was earlier, perceived to be of poor characters and his ailments were not accepted as a disease. Over a period of time, the suffering of a drug addict has been considered as a disease (though it may not be medically so) and people have been compassionate towards them.
