Futile medical care is the continued provision of medical care or treatment to a patient when there is no reasonable hope of a cure or benefit. In short futile care occurs when there is no visible benefit of the medical treatment. It may be of two types- quantitative and qualitative futility, where the likelihood that an intervention will benefit the patient is exceedingly poor.
Life prolonging machines have brought hope to many but have also generated diverse dilemmas. Such devices keep a patient's heart functioning even if the patient is in a coma; deciding on whether to switch off the life-prolonging machine in the face of medical futility is loaded with complex dilemmas. Likewise, another challenge is in deciding on whether to resuscitate a neonate born with severe congenital malformations
