• Challenges stepparents face:-
• When the kids live in two separate households and the rules and expectations are different in each household, that can be really hard. Another huge challenge is adjusting to the things that are different within one's new family from what one is used to and finding a balance that everyone is comfortable with. Communicating one's own needs and concerns is very important as well as realizing one is entering an already established family with their own ways of doing things. Flexibility and strong self awareness and communication skills are really important.
• Parenting in a step-family isn’t the same as parenting when the children’s birth parents are together. A step-parent and stepchild relationship takes time to build because there are no blood ties or shared history. And step-parents will have different roles in different families. They may feel that they have many responsibilities, but no ‘rights’.
• Each member of the stepfamily will have previous experiences of ‘family’. These may include hurt, death, rejection or betrayal. A child may have been rejected by a father; a wife may have been abandoned by a husband; children may be grieving the death of a spouse or parent, a man or woman may still be dealing with the effects of an acrimonious divorce.
• A stepparent is always worried about stepping on toes, getting backlash for something she said, or even something she didn't say;something that was misinterpreted by the ex or incorrectly passed on to the ex by the kids.
• Children are craving time and attention from their parent. They don't see their stepparents as authority figures, meaning the child doesn't see them as someone they have to listen to. If they feel resentment that they even have this extra person in their life, listening to and respecting them as an important person in their life isn't at the top of their to-do list. And even if the relationship is decent between them, it can still feel an intrusion when a stepparent tries to intervene.
• Challenges faced by stepfathers:-
• The biggest challenge faced by stepfathers is gaining the trust of their step children.Children find it difficult to accept that their mom chose a new man in her life.Children reject stepfathers quite easily and sometims do not accept them at all in their lives.
• Being a stepfather is nothing like being a father, even if the stepfather is also a biological father. Because the stepchildren did not “pick” their stepfather – and might simultaneously feel conflicted about their attachments to their biological father – they will likely be wary about affection toward and receiving discipline from the stepfather.
• In the end, a stepfather has no history or legacy with these children. So it’s pretty normal for a stepfather to experience feelings of being unwanted, dismissed or peripheral.
• While it’s critical for stepfathers to understand they aren’t a replacement for the biological father, they can play a supportive role in the home by being a patient and caring presence.
