An important step in creating confidence intervals for proportions is to check whether the success/failure conditions have been met otherwise the interval created will not be valid (i.e. we should not have created that interval)!

The following examples are estimating the proportion of people in the population who exercise regularly. Try to determine whether or not the assumptions have been met.

In a sample of 12 people surveyed, 8 exercised regularly.

In a sample of 105 people surveyed, 47 exercised regularly.

In a sample of 45 people surveyed, 43 exercised regularly.

In a sample of 24 people surveyed, 18 exercised regularly.

By rule of thumb the sample is considered sufficiently large if it include atleast 10 success and 10 failures. It is necessary for valid confidence interval for proportion.

Here success event is exercised regularly. The above condition satisfied only in second sample.

That is in a sample of 105 people, 47 exercised regularly.

All other samples failed these condition.
