Most annelids, like earthworms, have a simple brain that connects to their skin and muscles through simple nerves. Along with this there are chemo receptors on the skin which help the worms to taste things and also act as tiny sense organs that can detect chemicals. The body muscles respond to touch and contract when the sensation travels to the 'brain'.

If the posterior part of the worm is touched, the muscles contract and the rear part of the body curls and is pulled forward. In other words, the body contracts and pulls away from the touch.
