It would be a serious problem as many zooplankton and other marine organisms depend directly or indirectly on these phytoplanktons as a source of food.  If their numbers start to decrease, the populations of these species would drop as well. Also, the phytoplankton dies, sink and decompose. The decomposition process depletes surrounding waters of available oxygen, which marine animals need to survive. Finally, the food chains in the ocean would be adversely affected. The density of ocean water would drastically decrease.
