They can undergo conformational change upon binding of a ligand

The androgen receptors belong to nuclear receptor subfamily 3 and it is activated when androgenic hormones bind to it. They are translocated and present in the nucleus. The retinoid receptor bind to retinal cells and undergoes a conformational change. These receptors are located in the nucleus.  The androgen receptor is basically a DNA binding transcription factor and helps in regulating the gene expression. They bind to their ligands and hence help in development of male phenotypes
