1. What is a bad boss? And more importantly, what can you do in such a situation?

2. Come up with a bulleted list of characteristics and behaviors you believe a bad boss would have or exhibit.

3. Then, come up with another bulleted list of what you can do if you find yourself in a situation with a bad boss.

1) A bad boss or a bad leader:

We can define a bad boss in following words:

Bosses that don't provide the opportunity for staff to respond to accusations and comments. They intimidate people and allow other employees to bully employees, those are called bad bosses or bad leaders. A bad boss frequently talks right over an employee who has put aside their fear and attempted to communicate.

If, this is upto me that what would I do to deal with this kind of situation then I will take following steps:

1) I will complain to the HR department of my office about the bad behavior of my boss.

2) I will talk to the other employees of the office to do something about this if they are facing the same situation.

3) I will talk to my boss also to know the reason of the bad behavior.

4) If it is about me to do something about the bad behavior then I will not step back and will fight for my self respect.

There may be more ways that can be followed in order to face the bad behavior, that we will discuss in the coming answers.

2) Characteristics of a bad boss:

If you are facing a bad boss than you will see following characteristics:

  • Bad bosses love those people who report to them about their employees' behavior like brownnosers, tatletales and relatives.
  • Bad bosses choose favorite employees and cover up and make excuses for the poor work of their incompetent favorites.
  • Bad bosses ignore selected people and discriminate against many employees.
  • Bad bosses are tend to give their favourites better schedules and assiassignments, more attention and pal around them outside the work.
  • Bad bosses are often fail to communicate and they may not have clear expectations, time lines and goals.
  • Bad bosses change their minds frequently leaving employees off balance like they change expectations and deadlines frequently.
  • With bad bosses employees are always in trouble knowing where they stand and whether they are meeting expectations.
  • Where simple, positive communication can solve the problem, bad boses use disciplinary measurements inappropriately.
  • Bad bosses ignore their employees until the problem occurs and then they pounce.
  • Bad bosses speak loudly, rudely and one sidedly to employees.
  • Employees cannot respond to any situation or comments.
  • Bad bosses generally take credit of successes and positive accomplishments of employees.
  • Bad bosses quickly blame employees when something goes wrong.
  • To hide their own poor performances or lack of leadership and follow through, bad bosses often throw their employees under the bus loudly and in public.
  • Bad bosses often fail to provide rewards and recognition for positive employee performance.
  • The bad bosses doesn't know how to lead and interact with people.
  • A bad boss return to discuss the negative events continually and always searches for faults in employees.
  • Bad bosses don't accept constructive feedback from their employees.
  • Bad boses are dishonest, break promises and lacks integrity.
  • Bad bosses are often fail to deal with difficult situations.
  • Bad bosses pass one employee's information to another employee.

These are some characteristics that a bad boss may exhibit in different situations.

3) When facing a situation with bad boss, an employee could do following things:

  • An employee may go for the HR department help because that's why HR department is in a office.
  • An employee can take an action by noting down the behavior of bad bosses.
  • An employee can also take a step to try to escape from being the target of workplace bullying.
  • The worst step can be taken by taking no step for the bad behavior, because job is also important for an employee.
  • Try to change the working style so that the boss will get less chances to search for faults.
  • If you cannot tolerate the behavior or the bad behavior has reached to the maximum extent, search for a new job.

These are some steps that may be taken by an employee to overcome the bad behavior of a bad boss.
