When a cell breaks down glucose to produce ATP lots of hydrogen ions are produced. When a lot of hydrogen ions are present in a solution, that solution is an acid. If a lot of acid is present a cell would die. How does a living cell get rid of all the hydrogen ions that id produces while making ATP?

It combines the hydrogen ions with oxygen to make water.

It uses the hydrogen ions to produce the carbon dioxide that is released.

It sends the acid to the stomach where it is needed.

It uses the hydrogen ions o produce alcoho

Answer #1

It's quiet easy for a cell to maintain physiological pH of 7.35-7.45. Acidic environment can lead to acidosis and basic environment can lead to alkalaemia. Hence to maintain the hydrogen ion concentration during metabolism it is required to employ the buffer system for cell. During the oxidation of glucose, there is also the production of CO2, then this CO2 takes up hydrogen ions and convert into carbonic acid. During the production of ATP, carbonic acid again breaks out the hydrogen ions. This is how the acid base balance maintained.
