In a cross between a black and a white guinea pig, all members
of the F1 generation are black. The F2 generation is made up of
approximately 3/4 black and 1/4 white guinea pigs.

A. Based on this cross, which trait is dominant and which is recessive? What information lead you to your conclusion?

B. Diagram this cross, showing the genotypes and phenotypes of parental, F1 and F2 generations.

C. What will the offspring be like if two F2 generation white guinea pigs are mated?

Answer #1

When black and white pigs are crossed then all the members turn out to be black in the F1 generation.

When F1 offsprings are crossed then 3 are black and 1 is white.

This is the same case as law of dominance and law of segregation.

Black is a dominant trait. This is concluded because the dominant character is there in F1 generation according to law of dominance. Dominant character is able to express itself.

In F2 generation characters are segregated.

B.

B B
b Bb Bb
b Bb Bb

In F2 generation

B b
B BB Bb
b Bb bb

C

All of the offsprings will be white as white is recessive.

An animal scientist crossed a strain of large guinea pigs and a strain of small guinea pigs, and finds the Fı are phenotypically uniform, with an average size intermediate between the two parents. She allows the Fı individuals to inter-mate, resulting in 1014 F2 individuals (guinea pigs are prolific). In the resulting F2 generation, 4 guinea pigs were in the smallest size class (which is the same as the small parental line). a. From these data, estimate the number...
