Microbiology:
What are prions and how do they cause diseases? Explain.
Prions are proteinaceous infectious particles .prions are misfolded proteins with the ability to change their shape into normal protein and composed of single protein PrP ,Disease causing form with beta sheets .
They act as pathogens by causing several fatal transmissible spongiform encephalopathies (TSEs) .These are known as prion diseaes. They cause neurodegenerative diseases in humans and animals like mad cow diseases, scrapie, kuru and creutzfeld Jakob syndrome.
They don't have nucleic acids and are resistant to disinfectants,UV light.prions are destroyed by incineration or autoclaving in concentrated sodium hydroxide.
Prions cause brain damage by clumping in the brain ,damage or destroy the neurons, creating microscopic sponge like holes and fail to induce inflammatory response.
This abnormal accumulation in the brain cause memory impairment , impairment in brain function, difficulty in coordinating movement, personality and behavioral changes.
Prions are transmitted by ingestion or contact of mucous membranes with infected tissues.
Microbiology: What are prions and how do they cause diseases? Explain.
1. explain how prions differ from viruses, describe several diseases associated with prions. 2. explain the purpose of Bergey's Manual and how the current edition is organized
Epidemiology is defined as the study of diseases among populations. How does epidemiology relate to microbiology? What is the difference between an epidemiologist and a microbiologist? If you were an epidemiologist interviewing someone with an infectious disease that could lead to an epidemic, what are some questions you might ask?
What is the role of telomeres in osteoarthritis? (2) Do telomeres cause OA and other diseases or are they merely correlated with the disease? (3) Cantelomere length be used as a diagnostic tool for OA or other telomere-related diseases
Microbiology lab test on From your organism identificationP.Aeruginosa do an internet search and if the organism causes a disease give me two diseases it causes (UTI and RIS). If your organism does not cause a disease give me two of its known functions. In addition to this give me two additional tests you could run on this organism to help in the identification and what the results would be. Pseudomonas aeruginosa is a common Gram-negative, rod-shaped bacterium that can cause...
1. What potential problems can pelvic inflammatory disease (PID) cause? 2. What sexually transmitted diseases can cause PID? What other device can cause PID? 3. What two genes have been found to be related to breast cancer? 4. What signs and symptoms could be present in a patient with breast cancer? 5. Since I have been teaching microbiology, which has been about 14 years, the leading cause of sexually transmitted infections (STIs) in the US has changed. Over the years...
Unbalanced diets can cause diseases and, conversely, certain disorders and diseases can cause an inadequate intake and absorption of nutrients simulating the health consequences of an unbalanced diet. Discuss a particular disease or disorder that is caused by an inadequate diet or how a disease or a disorder can cause an inadequate intake of nutrients.
What is MRSA? How do we detect MRSA in the microbiology laboratory? How is MRSA transmitted? Should students with MRSA skin infections be excluded from attending school?
Explain the importance of microbiology and how it relates to the nursing profession
Prions are infectious nucleic acids. living, acellular entities. misfolded proteins which can cause normal versions to also misfold None of the above All of the above
Microbiology Disease Disease name: pneumonia Topics for each disease must include: Name of disease and a brief history Signs and symptoms Pathogenesis and virulence factors (what makes that bacteria/virus cause disease, etc.) Transmission and epidemiology (includes morbidity, mortality and prevalence rates for the diseases) Culture and diagnosis Prevention and treatment Something interesting about the disease (ex. How common is it, what is the likelihood of survival, did anyone famous die of it, do you have a personal story about it?........)
