Answer #1

Fibric acid derivatives (fibrates) are a class of medication that lowers blood triglyceride levels. Fibrates lower blood triglyceride levels by reducing the liver's production of VLDL (the triglyceride-carrying particle that circulates in the blood) and by speeding up the removal of triglycerides from the blood.

  • Fibrates increase lipolysis of serum triglycerides by increasing lipoprotein lipase activity.
  • They decrease hepatic production of VLDL triglyceride
  • They increase production of apoprotein A-1, A-2.
  • They increase gene transcription of apoprotein 1,2 via activation of peroxisome proliferator activated receptor alpha. Hence they increase HDL cholesterol levels.
  • Fibrates can markedly lower triglyceride levels (40 to 60 percent) and modestly raise HDL-C levels (15 to 25 percent).
