Answer #1

1. Glycolysis - occurs in the cytosol

input - glucose, 2 NAD+, 2ATP, 4ADP, inorganic phosphate

Output- 2 pyruvate, 2NADH, 2ADP, 2ATP(net gain)

2. Pyruvate oxidation- OCCURS IN mitochondrial matrix

input- 2 pyruvate

output- 2 acetyl CoA, 2 CO2, 2NADH, 2H+

3. Krebs cycle- occurs in matrix of mitochondria

input- 2 acetyl groups, 6 NAD+, 2 FAD, 2ADP ,2 inorganic phosphate

output- 4 CO2, 6 NADH, 2FADH2, 2ATP

4. Electron transport chain- occurs in inner mitochondrial membrane

Inputs- NADH2, FADH2,O2

Output- NAD+, FAD ATP, H2O

Final equation of respiration-

C 6 H 12 O 6 + 6 O 2 --> 6 CO 2 + 6 H 2 O + ATP

ATP production summary

Respiration steps Energy molecules produced Total ATP
glycolysis 2 ATP 2ATP
2NADH 4-6 ATP
Oxidative decarboxylation 2NADH 6 ATP
Kreb`s cycle 6 NADH 18ATP
2FADH2 4ATP
2ATP 2ATP

TOTAL ATP = 36- 38 ATP

Cellular respiration is the process that allows your body to harvest a huge amount of energy from a single glucose. In fact, it's so efficient that you get 30 ATP for every 1 glucose molecule you eat. This exercise is going to break down exactly where each ATP comes from. Instructions: Walk the audience through every step that is involved in generating an ATP, NADH or FADH2, include the names, structures and enzyme for each step. From there, look up...
