Dear Student,

Chordates are animals that belong to phylum chordata. They have four characteristic features: a notochord( a flexible structure found in the embryonic stage), dorsal hollow nerve chord(hollow tube like central nerve chords), pharyngeal slits(openings in the pharynx that are extended to the outside environment) and a post anal tail(external elongation of the body beyond the anus).

All these feature appear during some part of their lifetime.

The oldest known chordate fossil was found in China and it was described in the year 1995. It was a member of the species Yunnanozoon lividium. It is estimated to be 530 million years old.
