It is a difficult task to form a group. With great efficiency one can take initiative to form a group.There are four stages in the formation of a group- forming stage, storming stage, norming stage and performing stage.
Forming stage: In this stage the group is formed with members. The purpose of forming group is set there. Members are selected through their behavior and attitudes. In this stage various disputes appear. All the members do not agree on the same point. Various disagreements are discussed there. But in this stage the group members learn many things. They also realise the need of the group formation.
In the formation of small groups cultural backgrounds work greatly. Sometimes group may be formed with members belonging to same culture. Again to maintain harmony in diversity the members of different cultures are united to form a group.
Storming stage: In the second stage of small group formation the members appear more matured. They understand their roles and obligations. In this stage disagreements and criticisms are valid and logical. In this stage there may be struggle for power. The powerful persons face conflicts. By manipulations they try to manage power. There are some members who always remain at safe zone. But in this stage the members are more matured and skilled.
Norming stage: In this stage the group members become more familiar to each other. They are more cooperative and friendly. They enjoy the company of each other. Now the doubt and disagreement are solved with friendly way. There is smooth discussions and the norms are set very easily. They appear United now.
Preforming stage: In this stage the group members very skillfully set the goals and activities. The leaders are selected then. Various members are assigned with various responsibilities according to their ability and skills. The guidelines of activities are fixed and they are concentrated to their duty.
At last they meet and discuss the performance of their activities. They share and discuss common problems. They again set their future plan.
