What considerations should be included in a political plan for a position/organization with which you are familiar?
Company politics can be frustrating and demoralizing. But in most cases, company managers need to be as familiar with organizational politics as possible. As a manager, you may try to ignore politics or stay away from it. But good reasons lie behind a need for managers to be familiar with organizational politics.
To Exert Influence
The decision-makers within your company are normally plugged in to company politics. Organizational politics runs from department to department and connects executives and managers throughout the company. If you, as a manager, want to be considered for a company promotion or if you want to get the line items on your departmental budget approved, one of the ways to influence those decision-makers is to get involved in company politics. You can campaign with the right people to get the results you are looking for.
To Stay Informed
Individual decision-makers involved in company politics often gather and create committees to conduct research before taking important company decisions. As a manager, you need to be tuned in to the politics of the company to stay up to date on any committees being formed. The company may be considering making cuts in your department or eliminating your department. Getting involved in company politics can get you access to membership in committees that could help you to save your job and the jobs of each employee in your department.
To Gain Approvals
The bureaucracy in a company's political system can be much like that of a government agency. To get your ideas implemented, you need to be part of the political process. This can mean getting approval for new staff members to your department or getting your department approved for increased responsibility. For example, if you are the domestic sales manager of a company and the company is considering implementing a major accounts program, you can use company politics to get major accounts put under your department's responsibilities.
To Avoid Problems
Managers need to understand and learn to manipulate the company political system to get the things their departments need. But sometimes, in politics, part of knowing the system means knowing when to stay out of something. If an important company change is coming up, then you will know whether you need to get involved by staying up on company politics. Sometimes it pays to just stay out of some company issues. For example, if a manager friend of yours is on the verge of getting fired, you may feel the need to get involved. But if your company political contacts tell you that your friend is embezzling funds from the company and could face legal problems, then you use that information to stay away from the situation.
