What is lightening? Explain in terms of electric breakdown.
Lightning is a large-scale natural spark discharge that occurs
within the atmosphere or between the atmosphere and the Earth’s
surface.
Electrical breakdown occurs within a gas when the dielectric
strength of the gas is exceeded.
Although air is normally an excellent insulator, when stressed by a
sufficiently high voltage, air can begin to break down, becoming
partially conductive. Across relatively small gaps, breakdown
voltage in air is a function of gap length times pressure. If the
voltage is sufficiently high, complete electrical breakdown of the
air will culminate in an electrical spark or an electric arc that
bridges the entire gap.
The color of the spark depends upon the gases that make up the
gaseous media. While the small sparks generated by static
electricity may barely be audible, larger sparks are often
accompanied by a loud snap or bang. Lightning is an example of an
immense spark that can be many miles long.
Question 15 Dielectric breakdown, also known as lightening, occurs in air when the electric field exceeds 3 x 106 V/m. An automobile spark plug consists of two metal conductors separated by a distance of 0.72 mm. What is the minimum potential difference between these conductors that is needed for dielectric breakdown (a spark) in the spark plug, expressed in volts? . Question 16. A charge moves a distance of 1.5 m at an angle of 100° with respect to a...
what is the maximum electric energy density possible in dry air without dielectric breakdown occurring?
explain in detail breakdown of an record of employment (roe) and what it looks like?
The electrical breakdown of an insulator occurs when an electric field becomes large enough to ionize the insulator, allowing electrical current to flow; lightning is an example of the electrical breakdown of air.
