Choosing a Field Site

You will find an outdoor site that is safe and convenient for you to visit regularly during the course. Ecosystems modified by human activities are fine; Examples include a park, an artificial lake, the landscaping in front of an apartment complex, or even a college campus.

Keeping a Field Journal

entry should include the following information:

1) The date and time period of your visit;

  2) A photo or drawing documenting your visit (phone pics accepted);

3) At least a 1-page response (double spaced; 12 pt Times New Roman; 1” margins) to any one of the following prompts:

  

-Describe an aspect of the environment at the site.

-Describe an organism at the site, focusing on its habitat, behavior, or life history.

-Describe an interaction between two or more organisms that you observed.

-Draw a particular organism, labeling parts with ecologically relevant terms.

-Drawing the entire site, labeling parts with ecologically relevant terms.

-Describe a change in the site that you noticed since a previous visit.

-Describe how something you noticed relates to a concept covered in BIO 320 or 321.

-Describe how human activities influence the ecology of the site.

-Describe how one could make the site more inhabitable for some of its occupants and how such modifications might negatively affect other species.

-Describe how global warming might affect the site, assuming no human intervention.

-Pose a few interesting ecological questions related to your observations at the site.
