A geneticist discovered a maternal effect gene in a new species of fly which controls the formation of head and thorax segmental development. The progeny of female flies bearing at least one copy of the dominant allele m+ were found to develop normally. However, the allele m had a lethal penetrance of 28%. In a mating experiment performed by the geneticist a female fly with the genotype mm was mated with a male fly with the genotype m+m. Assume that after mating the female laid 408 eggs. 1. How many eggs are expected to produce viable offspring? All calculations must be shown to receive full points. 2. How many of the progeny can be expected to be females with the genotype mm?

assume that you have identified a unique gene in hawks which controls wing span in these birds. You have determined that the dominant allele (W) has a non-additive lethal penetrance of 18%. You have also identified a second gene which controls claw length and you determined that the dominant allele (C) of this gene has a non-additive lethal penetrance of 38%. After mating birds with a heterozygous genotype you obtain 360 eggs. 1) How many viable layers can you expect...

help Use the information below to answer questions 1 - 2. Leatherback turtles (Dermochelys coriacea) lay 50 eggs per clutch on soft sand beaches. Let us assume that the first and second cleavage within the developing eggs is controlled by the presence of a single pair of codominant alleles, CA and CB. Full cleavage and development to maturity will occur if an offspring bears alleles in the heterozygous (CAC) condition. However, there is only 18% cleavage penetrance if CACA appears...

Assortment of genes on same chromosome In the fruit fly Drosophila, there is a dominant gene for normal wings and its recessive allele for vestigial wings. At another gene locus. there is a dominant gene for red eyes and its recessive allele for purple eyes. A female that was heterozygous at both gene loci was mated with a male that is homozygous for both recessive alleles. Knowing this, complete the sentences with the correct terms. 94% crossing over independent assortment...

On the island of Notion, in the Factotum Archipelago, there lives a population of pencil bears. A portion of these bears have silky fur, and as a result, are much better surfers. The texture of the fur is determined by a single autosomal locus with two alleles: S (trait allele) and s (wild type allele). In a recent study, researched collected the values in the following table: Table 1. Counts of Pencil Bear fur style by genotype Phenotype Genotype Silky...
