Dilution of Concentrated Solutions

The number of moles of solute in liters of a solution of molarity is given by

Moles Solute = m x v

It is often of practical importance to take a concentrated solution of known concentration, and to add solvent to it to obtain a diluted solution with a desired concentration. During the process of dilution, since only solvent is added, the number of moles of solute is constant.

Using to denote the concentrated solution, and to denote the diluted solution, this becomes

Mc x Vc = Md x Vd

If three of the above quantities are known, then it is possible to solve for the fourth quantity.

Note that any consistent set of volume units may be used in this equation, since the conversion factor from one unit to the other appears on both sides of the equation and will cancel out.

In the laboratory, a student dilutes 25.7 mL of a 6.22 M hydrobromic acid solution to a total volume of 150.0 mL. What is the concentration of the diluted solution?

Dilution is a process in which the concentration of a solution is lowered by adding more solvent. Some of the reasons dilutions are performed are to minimize measurement errors when preparing a series of solutions at different concentrations, to save time and laboratory space, and to make more accurate measurements on an analytical balance when the target concentration is very low. The new concentration of a diluted solution can be determined from the following equation, sometimes called the dilution equation,...
