Home depot is a retail company that sells home improvement product with omni-channel presence. A retail company like any manufacturing can take advantage of lean techniques for getting competitive advantage.

In retail there are so many complex interdependent operations for sourcing products from suppliers through warehouses and then transport it to the stores and then finally to the customer standing in queue. All processes can be analyzed through lean tools. At present customers at Home Depot complain of less store staffing to address their requirements. Better supplier choices and vendor relationship to reduction of unnecessary movements of workforce in store can be introduced through adoption of lean system. DMADV technique can be employed that is abbreviation of define, measure, analyze, design and verify for improvement of processes.

If selling new product, it can be used for assessing consumer needs (can use KANO model), measuring it and then exploring the process / system for fulfillment and then to get feedback of its performance as well knowing how much revenue addition happened due to it.

Lean techniques basically involve reduction in wastages. In retail business, the lean technique can reduce wastages in inventory management, transportation, movements and customer wait time, worker utilization, eliminating defective products. It would help in in operating at optimum production levels and dropping non-value adding activities (through value stream mapping).
