  1. A large population of grass occurs in an area with two distinct kinds of soil. Some patches of soil contain heavy metal ions, others do not. The genotypes at the S locus determine how well grass plants survive in the different soil types: SS individuals survive best in heavy metal soils, ss individuals survive best in normal soils, and Ss individuals do not survive very well in either soil. Grass seeds are dispersed by the wind to different soil types; because normal soil is most common, ss individuals have the highest survival, and a relative fitness of 1. SS individuals survive next best, having a relative fitness of 0.70. Ss individuals have a relative fitness of 0.40. In this population of grass, the allele frequency of S at the start of a generation is 0.50. What will the allele frequency of S be at the start of the next generation?
  2. You're studying the genetics of sand fleas on 3 nearby small islands of the Seychelles chain, named Poivre, Florentin, and South Island. Assume that fleas occasionally drift on floating debris among these three islands (and in roughly similar numbers to/ from each island) but that sand fleas from other islands never make it to these islands. Right now, the frequency of the "A" allele at a particular gene (not experiencing
any selection) in these fleas is 0.2 in Poivre, 0.45 in Florentin, and 0.5 in South Island. What do you expect to happen to the frequency of "A" on Florentin in the next few generations?

  1. You're studying a population of an endangered wildcat in India. This population has been hunted aggressively, but there was also a rumor that the remaining ones are heavily inbred. You sample all 500 remaining cats to look for evidence of inbreeding and get the following genotypes:

AA: 31,
Aa: 188,
aa:281

What do you conclude?

Cats don't self-fertilize, so this was a dumb thing to even try to calculate

The cats are mildly inbred (F>0 but less than 0.3)

The cats are not detectably inbred

The cats are heavily inbred (F>0.3)

Consider two genes in a large, randomly mating population of turtles with no movement of individuals in and out of the population and no mutation. The two alleles at one gene, L and M, do not affect fitness. The two alleles at the other gene, T and t, do affect fitness -- they affect the thickness of turtle shells, and the degree to which they are protected from predation. TT individuals have thick shells, which repel predators, and survive best....

In a population of mice a particular locus has two alleles A1 (dominant) and A2 (recessive). There are 126 A1A1, 167 A1A2 and 88 A2A2. Is this population in Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium (3 pts)? In a population of Gragons, there are 3151 A1A1, 1678 A1A2 and 2014 A2A2 individuals. If the environment changes so that the homozygous recessive genotype suffers a reduction of fitness where its fitness is now 0.73, but the other genotypes are unaffected, what will be the frequency...

Question1 2 pts A population of ferrets with a neutral allele F governing coat color. F shows incomplete dominance such that FF ferrets are black, Ff ferrets are grey, and ff ferrets are white. They migrate from the mainland, where the F allele is at an abundance of 50%, to three islands. These islands differ in size one small, one medium-sized, and one large. The larger islands can support more ferrets. A stable population of 50 ferrets lives on the...

Problem Description: A gene with two alleles (e.g. A and a) is responsible for a dominant trait in Hellbenders (Cryptobranchus alleganiensis). AA individuals have a normal phenotype, while those with aa lack the trait. Heterozygotes have phenotypes that are identical to AA individuals. Although aa individuals have lower survivorship (15%) than those with the “normal” trait (35%), they have higher fecundity over their lifetime (100 individuals for aa; compared to 48 for AA and Aa). Assume the allele frequency of...

However, heterozygote individuals an intermediate phenotype bearing one stripe. Jewel beetles are abundant on islands. On one particular island an invasive rodent has been introduced which preferentially preys on striped beetles. In a population sof 26,760 beetles. Approximately 18,200 beetles are two striped. 8. You are studying an annual wildflower population. Flower color is either red or yellow and is controlled by a single locus with 2 alleles: R and y. Red is dominant to yellow, and both homozygous RR individuals and heterozygous individuals have red flowers, while yy individuals have yellow flowers. You have been studying this population for a long time and have seen fairly consistent allele frequencies for these two colors, with R=0.65 and y=0.35. Two years ago, a new...

On the island of Notion, in the Factotum Archipelago, there lives a population of pencil bears. A portion of these bears have silky fur, and as a result, are much better surfers. The texture of the fur is determined by a single autosomal locus with two alleles: S (trait allele) and s (wild type allele). In a recent study, researched collected the values in the following table: Table 1. Counts of Pencil Bear fur style by genotype Phenotype Genotype Silky...
