On the basis of requirement of oxygen bacteria are divided into aerobes & anaerobes.

Aerobes- they require oxygen for their growth. They may be obligate aerobes which grow only in the presence of oxygen are facultative anaerobes that are originally aerobes but can also grow without oxygen.
Most of the pathogenic bacteria are facultative anaerobes.

Anaerobes-the obligate or strict anaerobes can grow only in the absence of oxygen. clostridium tetani is one such example. obligate anaerobes cannot grow even in the presence of traces of oxygen.

Special type
Microaerophilic bacteria can grow in the presence of traces of Oxygen.Campylobacter and helicobacter pylori are example of microaerophilic bacteria.
