In the film Skin Deep-Race and Ethnicity on Campus, the person I related to the most was Tammy Early. Though, also in part relate to the struggles of Lisa Sanger. I relate to Tammy because she is so eager and enthusiastic to break the cycle of race based angst in her family, and struggling to figure out how best to tackle this monumental hurdle. She is concerned about being white and how that barrier separates her from groups which she would like to get to know better. The reason I related to Lisa Sanger, is that I like her, am someone from a marginalized group which can "pass" as a cis-gendered, white woman. I consider myself an androgynous pansexual. Therefore, I do not have a box to check most of the time when i fill out paperwork, and easily become mislabeled or have my identity disregarded. Not only does the misrepresentation hurt but also it alienates me from my community. At the end of the day however, I am perceived as a white woman, and given privileges associated as such. The person that i found the most difficult to relate to was Dane Ray. As a white male football player, his perspective was new to me and came initially from a place of ignorance, which over the course of the weekend of shooting was lessened. Discussing exchanges of racial slurs with buddies took some courage to come clean about and we saw significant growth from him by the end of the weekend.

                    What struck me about the film was the way in which each of the participants came to this experience with open hearts, trying to tear down the ignorance with love and understanding. Instead of deciding to dunk their heads in the sand, much like their parents, these college students are trying to make a change in the way we treat each other. They may come from different backgrounds, but these people share a common goal which unites them. This is the only way to combat systematic racism and its tools of community destruction, is by setting aside our fears and actually talking to each other about those fears. When we talk about our fears, we can rationally see the issues, when we talk about our fears with each other, they have a way of diminishing. When we extend love to our "others" we are really just building a bridge to friendship.

Well the film was great! It shows instead of getting humiliated by racism how we can overcome through it and understand on what basis people do the differences for skin color which does not have to do anything with your abilities . More such films should be made in order to educate the public and to bring out the awareness.
