HBV is unique in itself because it has a partially double-stranded DNA genome and is a non-retroviral virus that uses reverse transcription as a part of its replication mechanism and replicates by RNA intermediate.

Any antiviral drug that inhibits reverse transcription could be a potent antiviral therapy to treat HBV infection.
