Pigeons bob their heads during walking. Head bobbing is the rapid side to side movement of head which is one of the most common behaviors found in pigeons. There are more than one theory which suggests why they bob their heads. They do so in order to assist them in balancing. It may also helps them to have depth perception. This can also sharpen their vision. Bobbing the heads stabilizes their visual surroundings. Therefore, head bobbing in pigeons plays a critical role in how they see the world. It enables them to stabilize the image of their surroundings while in motion.
Pigeons cannot establish distances easily as they have the eyes on either sides of their head unlike the humans who have their eyes in the front of their heads. This disables the pigeons from sense of depth. Therefore, head bobbing becomes very important for depth perception. This will help them to compensate for monocular vision by observing the world from slightly different positions. This will help them in their survival, finding food and avoiding predators. Pigeon style bobbing involves them keeping their heads in the same positions, relative to the world around them as long as possible. This will help pigeons to easily spot predators and food. They can react to a change in the scene by bobbing their heads and thus gets a different picture.
This is why, pigeons bobs their head.
