What do you take this quote to mean? (From The Lives of Animals, by J.M Coetzee, page 23)

"Both reason and seven decades of life experience tell me that reason is neither the being of the universe nor the being of God. On the contrary reason looks to me suspiciously like the being of human thought; worse than that, like the being of one tendency in human thinking"

I partly agree with the quote that reason is a component of human thought process which is built by one’s education, environment and social make-up. Culture would also help people develop reason because individualistic societies would allow people to think freely and overcome the clutches of religious restrictions. Thus, one’s reasoning ability would be determined by one’s thought process which would be influenced by various social, economic and environmental factors.
