Some DNA polymerases have proofreading activities. After a nucleotide is added to a growing nucleic acid chain, it can be removed if it incorrectly pairs with the template. Speculate if ribosomes have similar proofreading activities during translation and give your reason.

The elongation factor EF-Tu in prokaryotes and eEF1 alpha in eukaryotes have GTPase activity which in turn is responsible for fidelity of the protein synthesis. The ET-TU-GTP and Ef-Tu-GDP have a short life span. The short time period between dissociation of these complexes allows proofreading of codon-anticodon. If an incorrect aminoacyl tRNA is bonded to a codon, it is dissociated from the ribosomal A site. The presence of incorrect aminoacyl tRNA slows down the hydrolysis of Et-Tu-GTP to facilitate the proofreading.

The proofreading of presence of aminoacyl tRNA is required as formation of incorrect protein may be fatal for the cells.
