Answer #1
  • CPT codes are made of 5 digit numbers and managed by the AMA and these are used to identify medical services and procedures ordered by physicians or other licensed professionals.
  • If the healthcare employees do not use the coding system correctly,it could lead to inaccuracy because of which they could face legal consequences. If they do overcoding in reporting codes in such a manner which results in higher payment by the insurer,it could be considered fraud and lead to persecution of the healthcare employee with legal and financial penalties.
  • And if they report undercoding, which means not including codes for all of the procedures performed or coding them for procedures that are reimbursed at a lower rate. This would result in lost revenue for the healthcare provider.
