In a typical classroom, teachers play different roles, but surely one of the most important is the classroom manager. In a poorly managed classroom, successful teaching and learning can not take place. Effective teachers seem to be effective at all levels of achievement with students regardless of the heterogeneity levels in their classes. If the teacher is ineffective, under the tutelage of that teacher, students will academically achieve inadequate progress, irrespective of how similar or different they are to their academic achievement.

When students use technology as a tool or support to communicate with others, they are in an active role instead of being the passive recipient of information transmitted by a teacher, textbook, or broadcast. The student makes active choices about how information can be generated, obtained, manipulated or displayed. Using technology allows many more students to actively think about information, make choices, and execute skills than is typical in lessons taught by teachers. In fact, once software is used as a tool to help students perform meaningful activities, students are in a position to identify their goals, make design decisions, and evaluate their progress.

The role of the educator is also evolving. The educator is no longer the target as the knowledge provider, but plays the role of facilitator, setting project goals and providing guidance and resources, going from student to student or group to group, providing advice and encouragement for student activity. The instructor rotates through the room as students work on their technology-supported projects, looking over the heads, asking about the reasons for various design decisions, and recommending tools that could be used.

Technology can be a great tool for strengthening and thus promoting the classroom's positive student behavior. Students who can track their behavior in the classroom using technology have shown increases in positive behaviors and decreases in negative behaviors and their consequences. There are a few reasons why these strategies are effective in tracking and monitoring. First, students ' social skills are still growing, so they may not notice negative behaviors immediately. Students may profit from being made aware of the presence of unwanted behavior. Second, the evaluation portion of the process gives concrete feedback to students about specific unwanted behaviors that helps them learn how to keep them in check. Students develop a greater sense of control rather than feeling unable to control or impact behaviors.
