Project: Mendelian Traits (Biological Anthropology)

Guidelines Create a visual presentation about a specific trait (a birth mark, body feature, genetic disorder, or disease) considered Mendelian. That is, select an inherited trait that is governed by a single allele or location in a gene. Some of these can be disorders that include sickle-ell anemia, lactose intolerance, high blood pressure, certain types of dwarfism, and Tay-Sachs disease. In other instances it can just be a birth mark, feature of the body (such as blue eyes), or production of a unique protein. It does not necessarily have to be a trait that affects your immediate family or someone close to you, but if you are familiar with a specific disease or disorder that would be better.

Here is what you need to do Research--Investigate the Mendelian Trait as your topic using information from your textbook, the Internet, or any other source to learn about it and, specially, how it affects the individual at the genetic level. At the same time consider the following questions as you conduct your research and as guides in your analysis:

How does this Mendelian Trait work at the genetic level? (In what gene is it locate?)

How is it inherited (i.e., passed on) from parent to offspring? (It is dominant, recessive or via one of the sex chromosomes?

How does the trait function at the genetic level? (What proteins does it produce or impede production of?)

How does the disorder affect the individual? (What does it do to the body?)

Are there any evolutionary implications of this trait? (Did it make sense to have this trait some time in the past? If not, can you propose or speculate a reason for existing?)

Can you think of any other pending questions?

Visual Presentation--Now, create a visual presentation. Carefully introduce and discuss your Mendelian Trait and make sure you include the following three parts in a visual presentation:

1.Introduction (1-2 slides). Discuss what a Mendelian trait is and then introduce the one) you selected.

2.Body (3-5 slides). Develop and discuss at least three aspects of your trait by presenting the information you collected in your research. (You may use the information from the questions above that fit your research, or you may propose your own questions).

3.Conclusion (1-2 slides). What has your analysis shown and what can we learn from it? Be creative and adventurous in your analysis.

Tips for creating a visual presentation: Use MS PowerPoint or Google Slides if possible. Each slide should have 2-3 bulleted terms on one half of the slide and the other half should have an image. Put the minimum amount of text on each bullet, preferably just a couple of words of very short sentence. These terms are in essence ideas that need to be elaborated in detail in the Notes section (the section below the canvas when in Normal mode), so as to provide an in-depth analysis in the discussion. Make sure your discussion in the Notes is written as a paragraph of an essay, citing any information you borrowed and then listing the references at the end of each Notes section. Remember, the idea of a visual presentation is so that you make it pleasing to the viewer by showing nice images. All the images, including your own, must be cited by putting the source in tiny letters in the lower part of the image itself and with a soft color tone.

Answer #1

Dear Student,

* Mendelian trait is controlled by a single locus in am inheritance pattern .

According to Mendels laws, a single gene mutation can also be inherited.

Examples: Sickle cell anemia, Xeroderma pigmentosa, Dwarfism, Lactose intolerant, etc .

Let us take the example of Sickle cell anemia :

The allele responsible for this condition is found on the chromosome 11 short arm.

In this condition, the RBCs attain sickled shape, which may lead to blocking of blood vessels and they cannot carry sufficient amount of oxygen and their life span is also very less.

Below I have given pathophysiology and genetics of Autosomal recessive sickle cell anemia.

Bacteroidetes and Firmicutes are two of the main phyla that inhabit the human gut. There is evidence from a number of sources that the ratio of Bacteroidetes to Firmicutes plays a role in weight. If the ratio is tipped in favor of Firmicutes, obesity can result. Propose a mechanism (other than that...

The self-isolated population consists of six males. Three of them are homozygous...
