Vitamin K is a fat soluble vitamin group which plays an important role in blood clotting. It is divided into two groups: Vitamin K1 (phylloquinone) and Vitamin K2 (menaquinone).
'K' in Vitamin K stands for Koagulation (Coagulation) meaning clotting. Vitamin K is not synthesized in the body, as a result, lack of appropriate amounts of vitamin K in the diet may lead to its deficiency. Under these conditions, a small wound would result in uncontrolled bleeding.
Vitamin K is an important cofactor for certain blood clotting factors involved in the blood clotting cascade (1). Studies reveal that anticoagulants such as warfarin sodium are potent antagonists to Vitamin K mediated blood clotting (2).
