What is paternalistic lying? Would a proponent of the fiduciary model think paternalistic lying is morally permissible? Why or why not?
What is paternalistic lying?
Paternalistic lying is lying for the benefit of the other person. The deceiver (or liar) makes assumptions that the lying is done in the interest of the other. The targets who are at the other end of the paternalistic lying do not necessarily think or accept that the intentions/motivation behind the lying are always good and develop an aversion towards it. Paternalistic lying interferes with a person’s autonomy and independence to choose or decide for themselves.
