1. Pull the lever, saving four people but kill one person.

2. Do not pull the lever, kill no one, but let four people die.

Pull the lever, saving four people but kill one person

We need to look at this from utilitarian framework of ethics. We need to maximize beneficence and reduce the maleficence of the end result. The best way to do this is make sure that the greater good prevails at the end.

Looking at this dilemma from the deontological point of view will not yield any fair result. This is because our intention of action or inaction will result in someone dying. As a result, we may actually control the outcome by our action/inaction. This is why we should look at it from utilitarian point of view.

Since we are following a utilitarian approach, we should look at maximizing benefit of our action. That means we should save lives of 4 people over 1 person.
