Sun City Boards has moved rapidly forward in its planning and organizational structure and improvements. The company now employs 17 people in key sales, manufacturing, and financial positions. Sun City is now approaching the accomplishment of one of its key goals: to create a new line of surfboards designed to be rented from kiosks at selected surfing beaches.

Tom Wilson, the CEO, heard from his business adviser that a team implementation would be a good idea, but he has no idea how a team should perform in his company.

You are a new Associate VP of Operations, and Tom has asked you to lead a team of employees in the implementation effort. You are asked to achieve the following implementation goals on this timeline:

  1. Design a new product that meets these criteria: sufficiently durable to hold up after multiple rentals, less expensive to make than standard boards, and to be easier for beginner surfers to use. Produce 10 of the new boards that sales staff can take with them when they're looking for surf shops that will team with SCB to distribute them (within 6 months).
  2. Research the best locations for the kiosks and find surf shops in those locations that will team with SCB to host the new product rental kiosks (simultaneous work during the year that the product is being designed and produced.
  3. Retool and/or expand the current manufacturing facility to accommodate the new product line and produce 100 of the new boards (within one calendar year of project start)

In this assignment, you will prepare your team plan for presentation to Tom Wilson. Your plan will include your team composition and team type. You will also describe what you anticipate happening in the life cycle of the team and how you will effectively achieve your team goals. The following steps will help you prepare for your written assignment:

  1. Thoroughly read the Groups, Teams, and Teamwork module.
  2. Carefully consider the types of teams, qualities of effective teams, and their stages of performance as described in the reading. Consider effective (or ineffective) teams you have been part of in your school or work life.
  3. Review the information above on Sun City Boards and the goals for the team you are to lead. Anticipate what might be some performance challenges for you as the leader.

Your Task

Prepare your team plan for Tom Wilson.Write a plan describing how your team will function and how you will approach your team goals. Your description can include illustrations and charts to clearly explain your expectations for the team’s progress. Although you don’t have specific employee names, you may make assumptions as to the skills or responsibilities of team members you would like to include on the project. Convince Tom Wilson that your team will perform well and achieve the goals. Specifically address these issues:

  1. Identify and describe the four types of teams and choose one. Explain specifically why your choice of team type fits the situation.  
  2. Describe the stages of team development and explain how you, as the project team leader, will lead the team through these stages.
  3. Showing your understanding of OCEAN from the Individual and the Organization module, what are the characteristics of team members that you will be looking for -- in this explanation, take your own personal OCEAN characteristics and potential biases into consideration and explain them.
  4. Explain how you will work with Tom and Jack as a management team for SCB, not just this project. Be specific in explaining to Tom, the management team leader, what you need in a team leader.
  5. Tom is someone who avoids conflict, but you understand that conflict is part of a productive team. Explain the types of conflict that teams encounter and how they affect team development. Address how you will address inevitable conflict as it comes up.
  6. Finally, using your analysis in Step 3, explain to Tom the incentives that you need personally and on behalf of the team and explain why these specific incentives will encourage success.

Staffing global organisation requires methods like Social Media Hiring, Referral Hiring, and Thid Party Consulting based Hiring which gives quality candidates. Social media hiring is best for cultural fitments however can be skeptical which is disadvantage as it doesnt give an holistic view. Referral hiring is another effective way because of trust and Recommendations shown. However it can be disadvantageous if referrences are unchecked and unverified.

Consulting based hiring gives top level candidates based on requirements and expectations. However disadvantages being cost of hiring is very high. Organisinations must check for quality and skills as well as qualification like global experience, overall countries travelled, cross border cross domain management skills, Leadership skills, International relations management, Team building.

Predeparting on boarding opportunity is very critical for global success and hence candidates must b egiven training in global countries and should be given sufficient time to adapt to its culture and way of doing business and then should be expatriated. Here entire family expenses are taken care of and sufficient financial and administrative support is offered for ease if transition to new nation.

Ongoung training will incorporate learning through peers, transition counselling through past expatriates, reverse mentoring and case studies and collaborative approach like on job training with senuor leaders. Here expatriates are offered regular support to understand working culture, management style and organisation structure and systems. Repatriation policies like attractive remuneration and total rewards package, career development plan for next 5 years, family health and insurance, children schooling and education support, long term stock options and bonsues, flatter hierarchy.

US employments laws like Equal opportunities as per Civil Rights act Article VI is most important and critical to be considered when in UsA as major emphasis is given on non discrimination policy of hiring. Other Acts being Sarbanes Oxley Act and Foreign Corrupt Practice Act which leaders must be aware of for ethical compliance and demonstrating integrity and honesty. Since collaboration and teamwork is at forefront and team cultural diversity is channelised effectively and compensation is well linked, team performance is guaranteed in this scenario.
