Imagine that you are an IT administrator with a medium sized manufacturing company. Your company has the following equipment:
5 Servers in San Francisco, LA and Sacramento, all deploying Windows Server 2102R2 as follows:
1 SQL Server Database server in SFO
1 Exchange Email Server in SFO
1 File Server in SFO. This server is also the Domain Controller
1 File Server in Sacramento
1 File Server in L.A
The file servers are connected through VPN lines to each other. To access the Exchange server the users have to go through the Internet to the firewall in SFO. To access the database server, user applications first log into the San Francisco File server and are then connected to the SQL Server database manager. Remember that database management servers are usually back-end devices and are accessed through another server.
Your company has been sold to a venture capital company and their objective is to maximize growth and minimize expenses.
Your mission is to find out if you could use Cloud Computing and/or VM to replace the current infrastructure.
At this point, your employer is not looking for exact answers and detailed diagrams. He would like you to consider various options and security concerns and make a suggested solution to the best of your knowledge.
Some more information for you:
1. There are approximately 20 workstations in each location
2. The new management is determined to save costs and have read about Cloud and Virtualization. To keep your job, your only option is to go along with their perceptions.
Look at various Cloud options available such as Microsoft Azure, Amazon and Google.
-Which one is the best to fill your infrastructure needs
-How good is the security versus an in-house system?
-Is a combination of in-house servers and Cloud services for some work is preferable? For example, should the email function be transferred to Microsoft Office in the Cloud and SQL Server kept in house?
