3. This question contains two parts be sure to answer both. First, define job enlargement Next, imagine that you are the front-end manager of a supermarket. You manage all the cashiers, baggers, and the customer-service desk. Recognizing that each of these jobs is repetitive without much variety. you want to enlarge each job to increase employee engagement and satisfaction. How might you enlarge the jobs you manage?.
Job enlargement is a restructuring method to increase the number
of tasks in a job and aims to give flexibility to the workforce
reducing monotony and boredom. Job enlargement is a task related
training method focusing on people and time management.
As a front end manager, I would strive to reduce the monotony
prevailing in each job. In the customer service desk, I would put
pictorials of the entire supermarket sections to help both the
customer desk employees and customers to find their product items.
Using these pictorials, the customer desk employees can easily
guide the customer to the respective section. The customer desk
employees at the supermarket take orders via mobile, internet, apps
and various other sources. I ensure that proper technology is in
place to process these orders. Most customer desk employees
complain of sitting in the chair for hours and this is the major
boredom. I would enlarge their jobs by making them do some physical
work by replenishing the supermarket shelves on out-of-stock items,
helping customers to load their groceries into their vehicles
parked in the parking lot and assisting them in the checkout
process. Customer returns, complaints can also be addressed by
them. This will make their interaction with the manager and the
floor level workers more effective.
In the case of a cashier, they get bored by typing invoices and
collecting payments repeatedly. A cashier in the supermarket guides
the customer on various payment options, informs the customer on
coupons and discounts, handling exchanges and returns, maintaining
invoice register for their shifts, money refunds etc. I would
enlarge their jobs by providing flexible work schedules.
In the case of a bagger, in addition to packing groceries, loading
carts, returning carts, packing products for home delivery,
retrieving items, I would enlarge their jobs by encouraging them to
provide courteous service to customers in handling their complaints
and reporting to the management. Their job could be enlarged by
keeping the work environment clean and handle the entire
maintenance of the supermarket. This could reduce their boredom at
work.
