Slavery work was a very hard work sustained by force and the threat of humiliation and separation from family

At the beginning, this hard work often were consistent with a repetition of the same tasks in India and south - US, in particular in crops plantations or small farms.

But in 18 th centuries, slaves in middle colonies and New England, began to do a different kind of work with a variety of tasks inducing them to learn different skills that allowed the specialization of their jobs.In this way, most of them became carpenters, cooks, boatmen or cooper , activities required around the plantations where usually slaves work.

So this changes, depends upon:

- mechanization advances : introduction of devices in agriculture, obligate slaves to learn new skills.

- stages of plantation development

- changes in managment of outlands
